Things that go bump...

I was five the first time.  Scared the shit out of my parents.   They didn't know what had happened or how I had ended up in the pool from the safety of my room.  They weren't bad parents, they didn't not watch out for me.  If anything they watched me too closely.  Their only child, the only one they would ever have due to health issues and complications during my birth.

Anyway, there I was, five years old, in my pajamas and in the pool, swimming, straight to the bottom.   Dad of course dove in to pull me out after hearing the splash, and Mom?  Well she freaked out.  See, my bedroom was on the second floor, and the only way to the pool was past them.  And I hadn't gone that way.

It wasn't until it happened again that they realized that something about their baby boy was off.  Something just wasn't right, but they didn't know who to talk to.  Or if they should.  Dad made damned sure to teach me to swim.  Just in case.

They couldn't curb it, so they put surveillance cameras in every room, and in every area of the property.  They didn't know what my range was and really I didn't either.   Over the years I learned to control it.   Mom and Dad would work with me, and I will admit I got a little lazy.  I mean, why walk from one room to another when I could just think of where I wanted to be and be there?

Of course Mom and Dad instilled in me the need to keep it all quiet and to not use my skill in school, which I didn't attend until high school - prior to that I was home schooled, where people could see me, but let me tell you, it definitely came in handy in when I was running late for classes.

How to control my ability wasn't the only thing I learned growing up.  Dad had a certain skill set that was, shall we say... aw hell it was fucking awesome.   His uncle had taught him, and Dad passed those skills onto me.   Kind of freaky when you think about it, a prosecuting attorney knowing the ins and outs of being a highly skilled thief.

I suppose he couldn't help but teach me the skills he'd been taught as a youth, growing up in Edinburgh. Despite his wealth, which he'd come by legitimately, he had the bug. That need that arose in some, like an addiction. The need to accept the challenge presented by a locked building, a secured vault, a wall safe in some asshole's mansion...

He taught me everything I know about safe cracking, lock picking, stealth... And I taught him a few things as well. Mostly that not all doors have to be opened to get at what's behind them.

One thing I learned the hard way?  High voltage electricity really sucks ass.
